Tales from Bandcamp: Fables of the Sleepless Empire by Unexpect

Listening to Canada’s Unexpect is akin to sampling random potions in a mad alchemists laboratory.  You never know what you’re going to get, but you can be sure it’s going to send you for quite a loop.  The insane amount of styles Unexpect blend into their music is staggering (extreme metal, classical music, and jazz being at the forefront), and by way of some wicked black magic they are able to spin cohesive and fluent songs out of pure chaos.  Fables of the Sleepless Empire is their latest release and in my opinion is their best album to date.  While still being a glorious mish-mash of sound they ‘simplified’ their songs making a listen much less dense but still rewarding to those willing to dig into the music.  If you’re feeling a bit looney today and need some music to compliment that mood, look no further than Fables of the Sleepless Empire.  Enjoy!!  Peace Love and Metal!!!!

Theme Thursday: Fun and Quirky Metal

When the descriptors ‘avant-garde’, ‘cross-over’, or ‘experimental’ gets tossed onto a metal band many people tend to look away as thoughts of music that is too strange for their tastes comes to their minds.  And honestly, ya, sometimes that is often the case, but as always it is not de-facto.  So, as par for the course, I’m going to highlight some avant-garde bands that are some quality listens and have an experimental style that will appeal to those that don’t like anything too strange (to an extent, there will be a couple deeper cuts).  To take it a step further, the songs and bands in this collection will be more on an upbeat note leaning towards having fun with their music as they experiment with what can actually be done within the metal genre.  So, call ’em avant-garde, experimental, cross-over, or WTF metal, but don’t say that they didn’t make you smile.  Enjoy!  Peace Love and Metal!!!
