Ya, I know I posted a mellow post metal band last week and it was my intention to bring you something with a bit more high intensity energy this week, buuuut, then I saw that *shels have their catalog up on Bandcamp with great prices behind them ($7 or ~5€) as well as other great artist from their label, Shelsmusic.
Plains of the Purple Buffalo was one of my favorite albums of 2011 and the more I listen to it the more I love it. If you enjoy some great, and mellow post-metal you cannot go wrong with this album as it is an example of best in genre. The music has a certain cinematic feel to it and it is way to easy to get lost in the detailed soundscapes the band creates. To save time (and be lazy) here’s the review of the album I wrote up when I first got my hands on this gem. If I had to choose my favorite song of 2011 the first track of “Journey to the Plains” would get the #1 spot, such a beautiful song. Give it a listen and check out Laurentian’s Atoll while you’re over on the Bandcamp page, it’s a bit harder edged and another great album from *shels.
Continuing on with Fan Video series here are some more awesome music videos and tributes made by the fans. A special thanks to all the budding video editors and at home music video directors, your love of the music video has provided me with countless hours of entertainment! If you know of other great fan videos, let us know, we love watching them!! Enjoy!! Peace Love and Metal!!!!
Blind Guardian – War of the Thrones
It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of the Game of Thrones series (along with the books) and Blind Guardian. When I heard “War of the Thrones” the first time on At the Edge of Time I was quite ecstatic. Now Youtube user Chaoticgreece has taken the song a step further and combined them into an awesome tribute video to Game of Thrones. Bravo!
Hey all!!! Hope everyone had an awesome holiday season and kick off to the New Year. Now that we are at the start of 2012 I think it’s fair that we release our personal Top 15 Albums of 2011. Making this years list was quite a difficult charge. I’ve been seeing around on the internets that many were disappointed in 2011… Myself, this was one of the best years in metal, ever, making the narrowing down of the best around a bit tricky. There were great follow-ups, amazing breakthrough albums, and some wonderful debut albums. I also discovered many new bands to listen to this year with a good handful cracking my Top 15. If anyone is complaining that “new music sucks”, well they aren’t listening. There is an innumerable amount of great stuff to check out, you just have to have an open mind and give anything that catches your ear a listen (or eye if the album has great artwork). If you do a little searching for your tunes every year will be the best year in music for you(and with the internet finding awesome tunes is so much easier and cheaper than before, until you start finding music you love and going on some shopping sprees 🙂 ). Positive thinking and law of attraction and all that stuff.
When making my list the criteria I used was how often I listened to each album, initial impact and how long that first impression lasted, and how well the album grew on me. I hope you all enjoy my picks and hopefully find some cool new music to listen to. And if you look at my list and think of a band that would be right up my alley, let me know!! And let us know what some of your favorite albums were for 2011. Enjoy!! Peace Love and Metal!!!
While I sit here listening to Plains of the Purple Buffalo I can’t help but to fade out writing and get absorbed in the soundscapes that *shels have crafted. Seriously, I before I just wrote that first line I was staring mindlessly into the cover of the album while the music painted a picture of lush rolling plains and passing winds. This wasn’t the first time this album did it to me either in this or previous listens. Not often is a band able to entrance me so much………….. Damn, again, I think I might have to turn off the music if I want to finish this review.
