Today I had a migraine for the first time in years. Some people think migraines are headaches. They’re not. Splitting headaches are one of the side-effects of a migraine, which is dilation of the capillaries in the eyeballs for any number of reasons. Anything that constricts blood vessels is good when you have a migraine, especially plenty of coffee and nicotine, heh heh.
After I’d slept off the worst of the migraine I started doing my hit parade post for today. My wife asked why I was listening to loud metal music while I still had a headache. I gave her the obvious answer: Metal has curative powers. I know it makes me feel better.
When I started making my annual hit parade lists four months ago I knew Diablo Swing Orchestra and Leprous would be near the top a few times each. I expected one of them to be number one for 2006. When I was doing my bubble-sort and playing song against song, however, a bunch of guys from Finland leapt out of the forest and surprised every one of me.
Finland is the most remote country on Earth. Even if you’re standing on the Finnish border, Finland is farther away than anywhere in the world and maybe on the Moon too. Finland has a small population. All they manufacture is snow, swamps, champion racing drivers and metal music.
In Finland the emphasis is clearly on quality, not quantity. How else would one explain how Finland produced my top three songs of 2004?

Shade Empire is a band that I just recently discovered. They are from Finland and play symphonic black metal mixed with industrial/melodic death-influences. Their new, upcoming album sounds very promising based on the two singles they have released so far and I wanted to share one of them with you today. This song reminds me a bit of Dimmu Borgir’s style of music, although much more varied and dynamic.
The album ‘Omega Arcane’ is planned to be released in May.
