Sonic Cathedral’s Top Female-Fronted Albums of 2014

SC_Title_Pic3

Sonic Cathedral is the top website for news and reviews focused exclusively on female-fronted bands. That’s my honest opinion. Femme metal and associated modern FF genres have become hugely popular this century. No group of writers has better relations with the women of rock and metal than SC. No website publishes as much honest and deserved admiration for  the great female artists, their music and their gigantic crusade against gender prejudice in metal.

Mik’s Top 100 Favourite Albums of All Time #91-95

Top100

A while ago, at the same time as Matt and Reggie, I posted my Top 100 All Time Favourite (Metal) Albums over at the forum The History of Metal on FB. It took a good amount of time and effort to put it together, but it was so much fun! My taste in metal is always changing, so the list will not always look the same. In fact, it’s already a bit different than it was when I first put it together and posted it on the forum seven months ago.

I tried to limit myself to three albums per band to make the list a little more diverse and interesting. I don’t really consider the ‘test of time’-factor when selecting what albums that will go on my list, instead I measure it by how strongly the album has affected me emotionally and how much/often it has helped me through both good and bad phases in my life. That’s why you can find quite a few newer releases among my favourites too.

Album Review – Lacuna Coil – Dark Adrenaline

Dark Adrenaline is the 6th studio album from Italy’s Lacuna Coil. Prior to the release of Dark Adrenaline, I read an article that said singer Cristina Scabbia liked the direction the band was taking. For me that meant more pop/less rock. Therefore, my anticipation for new Lacuna Coil music dwindled. Despite my lack of enthusiasm, I purchased the album on its release date and gave it several spins before deciding how I felt. Should I even say spins anymore? There was nothing actually spinning, but I think you know what I mean. The computerized sound files were playing all day.

Video of the Week – Trip the Darkness

The first “Video of the Week” of 2012 is by band set to release an album on 24 Jan, 2012 in the United States (23 Jan in Europe).  Italian rockers Lacuna Coil will unleash Dark Adrenaline with Trip The Darkness as the first single and video.

I am a little surprised by Trip The Darkness.  I thought it would sound even more “pop” based on the direction I thought the band was taking.  Trip the Darkness is a bit darker and heavier than songs on their current release, Shallow Life.  I hope this is an indication of what the rest of Dark Adrenaline sounds like.  Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Lacuna Coil Release New Single

Italian rockers Lacuna Coil have released their first single, Trip the Darkness, off their forthcoming album Dark Adrenaline.  The new album is scheduled for a (North American) release on January 24th, 2012.  Lacuna Coil is currently preparing to hit the road in Europe this month to promote their new album.  Fans in Italy, 18 locations in the UK, plus Belgium and Netherlands will be treated to some new music.  Lacuna Coil has also been invited to join Megadeth on their Gigantour 2012.  Sounds like an A Tout Le Monde duet live…

Theme Thursday – The Women of Metal

For many moons men were the dominant gene fronting some of the most brutal and sometimes most haunting metal bands.  This is still true as men outnumber women as front-men (front-people, singers, vocalists).  Women, now more than ever, are taking the lead role and doing a damn good job maintaining the feel of a metal band, but with (usually) heart-piercing vocals.  The other end of that spectrum are bands like Arch Enemy and Kittie whose female vocalists kick you where the pain shoots to your stomach and paralyzes you for a while (men know what I am talking about).

It’s time these women get their own theme of the week at A Metal State of Mind.  Let it be known that women and metal unite and kick ass.  Here are just a few of the many bands out there with women leading from the front.  If you know of any others that kick-ass and take names, let us know.
