Making my Top 15 Albums of 2012 list this year was a bit daunting. There were so many records I heard, and many of the excellent and well deserving of a bit of extra attention. Being as I am, I felt guilty for leaving some of them off, so here I will present, in no particular order other than random, a good handful of albums that came out during 2012 that I enjoyed and feel that you lovely readers should give a listen to. Check ’em out and enjoy!! Peace Love and Metal!!!!
Since the first seconds my eyes and ears were graced with the hilarious video for “Sock ‘N’ Roll” I knew I had to get my hands on an album by Kontrust. Everything that was so not metal was metalized in that song and video and it completely and instantly won my heart over. Pop rock, sock puppets, dance music, yodeling, reggae, and touches of hip-hop attached themselves to the bands über-bouncy brand of groove metal, and it was one of the most rad things I’ve heard. Then I learned that the Austrian septet performed entire shows in lederhosen, man, how much cooler could this band get! Before going into their latest record, Second Hand Wonderland, I had my reservations that the rest would not be able to match the pure cheesy genius of “Sock ‘N’ Roll”, fortunately the rest of the album contains all the ridiculous splendor of that tune, and then some.
When the descriptors ‘avant-garde’, ‘cross-over’, or ‘experimental’ gets tossed onto a metal band many people tend to look away as thoughts of music that is too strange for their tastes comes to their minds. And honestly, ya, sometimes that is often the case, but as always it is not de-facto. So, as par for the course, I’m going to highlight some avant-garde bands that are some quality listens and have an experimental style that will appeal to those that don’t like anything too strange (to an extent, there will be a couple deeper cuts). To take it a step further, the songs and bands in this collection will be more on an upbeat note leaning towards having fun with their music as they experiment with what can actually be done within the metal genre. So, call ’em avant-garde, experimental, cross-over, or WTF metal, but don’t say that they didn’t make you smile. Enjoy! Peace Love and Metal!!!
Did you ever play that game where you follow the Youtube recommendations so far deep that you end up in ‘that part of Youtube’? Well today after some Youtube surfing I came across a video by an Austrian band named Kontrust and their video for “Sock ‘n’ Doll”. I really don’t know what to make of this other than, I kinda like it. It’s fun…. and different. If you’re a metal purist you may want to stay clear, but if you want a good WTF laugh give it a watch, it’s got sock puppets. Enjoy! Peace Love and Metal!!
And here’s another video by them I found to be quite the knee slapper. Think: Austrian Soulfly.
