Reggie’s Top 100 Favorite Albums of All Time #40-36

As we journey down the path to my number 1 favorite album of all time, you will likely see more and more classic metal albums appearing on the list.  Many of these albums have been my favorites for decades while some are relatively new….only came into my life in the last couple of years.  This all-time list is an ongoing effort started by our friends at The History of Metal page on facebook.  Each day we list another album until we get to the end which should take us just up to the end of the year.  Below is my next list of five as we near our way to #1.  Enjoy!

Themed Thursday – Overkill

This is more like an anthropological study of a band through their videos and albums. I am examining the career of East Coast (USA) thrashers Overkill. I think they are highly underrated and had the potential to be something much bigger than they were. They endured the 90’s metal-meltdown and today are stronger than ever with their most recent release, Ironbound.

A little gee whiz for you, Overkill was the first “thrash” band to release 10 studio albums. 15 albums later, they are celebrating 25-years in the business. Overkill is like the little engine that could. If you ever saw Overkill live you would probably agree with me their live show (even today) is energetic and on fire whether for 100 or 1,000 people. Overkill has never taken the easy road out of town and they don’t seem to let that bother them. Here is where their story begins.

Overkill (In The Studio)

East coast thrashers Overkill have been cutting some demos and getting ready to hit the studio in October to record the followup to the awesomeness of 2010’s Ironbound.  The new album, due in the spring of 2012, will be Overkill’s (count’em up) 17th studio album.  That’s a hard-working and dedicated group if you ask me.  Just thought you would like to know so you can put it on your radar for 2012.

Album of the Week – Overkill – Ironbound

For the most part all of my personal picks for album of the week have been albums that were released from a few to 20 years ago.  This time I thought I would recognize a newer album from an old band that metalheads of all ages should know and love.

Overkill is one of my all time top 3 favorite bands.  They are right up there with Megadeth as a lead player in the world of metal.  Personally, Overkill should have been one of the original “Big Four” but I wasn’t around to market Overkill’s music to the masses.  In some ways, I think Overkill liked it that way.  So some 20+ years later Overkill is still snapping their fingers and their necks to good old-fashioned thrash metal.

Ironbound, which was released earlier in 2010, is an outstanding album and is probably Overkill’s best in 10 years.  Ironbound shreds from beginning to end.  It is really a great piece of work from the moment “The Green and Black” kicks off the playlist.

Ironbound is a metal assault in the range of 57 minutes which meets my personal requirements for making it worth buying.  If you are a new fan to Overkill, Ironbound is a good start and for the old fan, this will impress you.
