Album Review: Resonance Room – Untouchable Failure

Resonance Room cover

Resonance Room from Italy released their second album Untouchable Failure last week. It’s an elegant mix of heavy prog and dark gothic metal with a strong influence from bands like Pain of Salvation, Katatonia and Evergrey. That sounds like a good thing, right?

Yeah, for the most part it is! I enjoy every single one of the ten tracks on the album; they are easy to listen to and follow. The melancholic atmosphere, heavy guitars, the soft passages and melodies with keyboards in the background, just like it should be. Untouchable Failure is a nice step forward from their previous release Unspoken. This time they managed to create a more diverse, warm and deep sound, even though I wish it would be a bit more consistent and dynamic. The singer’s Italian accent can clearly be heard in most of the songs and it can be a problem if you want to listen to the lyrics and hear what he’s singing. Fortunately, he has a very pleasant voice that suits this type of dark, gothic music.

Plantera7’s Top-10 of 2011 So Far

This year has been great for metal and I feel the best is yet to come later in the year, namely September 2011.  Housebroken did a great job outlining his top-10 for the first half of 2011.  Let’s see how die-hard metal fans tastes compare and contrast.  Here is my top 10 for 2011, January through June.  I will keep this relatively short since I will be posting a full report on the Big Four sometime this weekend.

Album Review- Evergrey, “Glorious Collision”

The new Evergrey album was one of two albums that I was really looking forward  to this month (the other being the Devildriver “Beast” album).  I am a big Evergrey fan, and their last two albums were great.  So I had high hopes for this one.

From looking at the album artwork, you can tell what is meant by the album title.  I am guessing that the glorious collision is with the ground.  Pretty dark.

These guys are one of the best Swedish bands out there.  I thought long and hard about how to describe Evergrey’s sound, and I think I have narrowed it down to “Heavy Progressive Soul Metal”.  They do a great job of setting a tone during their songs.   There are a lot of varied song types on the album, and each song is great, but what sets these guys apart is their atmosphere.  There are a couple of songs on this album that, for lack of a better word, are just haunting.  If you get a chance to listen to the album, pay close attention to “I’m Drowning Alone” around the 2:55 mark.  It sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.  This whole album has a tremendous amount of energey, soul and emotion.  And not that emo crap, just emotion.  I can’t say enough how much this album strikes a chord with me in a way that no other band can.

This is another great album that I wanted to listen to over and over.  It hits every box for a great album, and it definitely is one I would recommend to anyone, avid fans and newbies alike.

I am giving Evergrey’s Glorious Collision 5 out of 5 devil horns, and bestowing it my first “Haunted Album” award.

As an Evergrey bonus, I just found out they are supporting Kamelot in April at a venue near me.  That show is now my #1 most anticipated show of the year.

Give the album a listen, and let me know what you think.

Have a great day.

Song of the Day- 24 February 2011- Leave It Behind

Hello All,

I’ll keep this brief today, as I am currently writing the review for the album which contains today’s SOTD.

Today’s Song of the Day is “Leave it Behind” by Evergrey, from the album Glorious Collision.

This is a great opening song for the album.  I don’t want to take away from my review, but this is a really good album.

Have a great day.

Song of the Day- 22 February 2011, The Blame Game

Metalheads of the world rejoice.  The new Devildriver album is out today.  I have to admit I have had the album for about a week (I assure you I obtained it through legal means).  This album and the new Evergrey album have been the only two albums I have listened to for the last week.

In honor of the new release, today’s Song of the Day is “The Blame Game” by Devildriver, from the album Beast.

I will tell you this: buy the album.  You won’t be disappointed.

My review of Devildriver’s “Beast” and Evergrey’s “Glorious Collision” will be posted soon.  The only place you can read my reviews is here on this blog.

Have a great day, everyone.
