From the opening drone and Om track to the closing acoustic folk song I can totally say I have not been enthralled with such a shattering doom album since Pallbearer’s latest outing. Messa have crafted a monumental debut overflowing with suffocating atmospheres and bluesy doom thunder topped off with sultry female vocals that will hypnotize you as they invoke demons to consume your flesh.
Mixing the droniness of Sunn O))) with the psychedelic edge of bands like Subrosa and the bluesy occult punch of The Devil’s Blood or Blood Ceremony, each song is nothing short of completely engaging. Whether it’s the slow burn of “Babalon”, the Freebird-freakout of “Hour of the Wolf”, the doom-clarinet jam on “Blood”, or the driving riffing on “New Horns” there is always some trick up Messa’s sleeve to draw you even deeper into their rituals. Even the ambient interludes are inspiriting. Little touches like the crackle and hiss of vinyl punctuate how much care went into this record.
If you have any love for doom metal in your veins (of course you do!) you need to go to Messa. Our Father who art in doom, Messa be thy name. Thy riffs come, thy will be done. On Earth as is in Inferno.
As usual, listen, force your friends to listen, force your enemies to listen, give the band money, support music and shit. Peace Love and Metal!!!!
First of all I am not going to mention that other guy from that other band that is known to be vocalist Jonas Renske’s buddy. Not even going there. I keep seeing those comparisons and it’s driving me nuts. Second, it’s going to be hard not to be a bit biased because of my love for Katatonia’s depressively wonderful melodies. But, The Fall of Hearts is upon us, all 1+ hour of it, and I must speak about it. That’s a huge chunk of melancholy, but the good thing is that it doesn’t “feel” like an hour. So, I expected the album to follow the path of Dethroned and Uncrowned. I mean, let’s face it, that haunting remix of Dead End Kings was well transformed, produced, and engineered. For as much as I love doom metal one sect of the genre I’ve never really been able to get into is funeral doom, bar an exception or two. It’s just a style that has to be particularly fresh and engaging for me to be able to sit through at attention as 10 plus minute long songs plod along. So forgive me for remaining ignorant to the thunderous majesty know as Ahab for over a decade. Self-proclaimed as nautical doom metal these Germans stay true to their Melville-ian namesake and produce dirges which require patience and a hearty pair of sea legs to really appreciate the payoff of a gorgeous, well-crafted world. Slow and sludgy Ahab’s new album, The Boats of Glen Carrig, looks to be the bands most accomplished record to date. Going back and checking out their earlier releases as reference points (Holy Shit! The Call of the Wretched Sea is a beast!) it also sounds as if the band is pushing their sound into uncharted territory. That may or may not be a good thing depending on how slow you like your doom metal.
Who needs more doom metal in their life? Everybody! That’s who! Doom is awesome. Especially when there are so many bands doing cool and interesting spins on the genre. My latest peruse of Bandcamp has let me to check out Khemmis (clicked on it mainly because that cover art is freaking awesome. Do you hear that bands? Even in the digital age, kick ass cover art still sells.) A crusty layer of fuzzy stoner doom touched with spatterings of old-school hard-core, NWOBHM, and death metal will hammer your eardrums with some wonderfully chunky grooves. At times you get a tune that is like Pallbearer’s tone crossed with Iron Maiden’s bombastic leads and solos other are a Candlemass’ stomping grooves meets Madball’s beatdown vocals affair. As crazy as those cocktails sound Khemmis pull them off with ease, gusto, and panache. Regardless of the stylistic mix they are jamming with Absolution simply rocks hard front to back and is a must listen for any discerning doom fan. Listen, buy, support, share, doomstomp!!!!! Enjoy!!! I am not one for live albums anymore. I used to always buy them because I felt I was enjoying a piece of the band that I did not have regular access to. The live setting was raw and mostly unedited back then. It seemed pure and energetic. Then, bands like Dream Theater and Opeth (to name just two) went and threw a whole bunch of production into their live albums/DVDs and now my bar has grown accustomed to excellent sound. How can I go back to bootleg-ish production now? There is one exception to the rule though. The (sort of) “unplugged” setting is an intimate atmosphere free of distortion and all around craziness. More importantly, bands have to rehearse quite a bit because the audience will be able to hear every single nuance of the music. It has to be awesome. Unfortunately, no real interesting videos go released this week. Just ones with the band playing in a basement, abandoned warehouse, forest, etc. And you all know how much I love those. Silver lining being, I get to dig a bit back for stuff I overlooked throughout the year. Here’s one video and record I criminally overlooked until recently. Slow, plodding, methodical, droning doom is rarely associated with adjectives like relaxing, uplifting, and beautiful, yet long time trio Earth pull it off again and again as they push the boundaries of the doom genre on each album. While their last pair of releases were a tad lackluster compared to the monumental slab of instrumental drone/doom that is known as The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull, they have just released one hell of a shattering record that soars the band to new heights.
Now with the inclusion of vocals in their still very instrumental affairs, Earth have really created their most engaging record to date. For music this thick and viscous, I shouldn’t be so sucked in, yet I am. I get this heavy White Album-era Beatles vibe throughout the whole thing, especially on the song ‘From the Zodiacal Light’, which really adds a unique flavor to the music.

Sometimes I wonder if I’ve died and gone to Heaven. The past handful of years have seen a resurgence of doom metal unlike any other genre out there. Back in the 90s and early aughts I had to scape and scrawl to find a new band out there releasing a quality doom release, and now I can’t even keep up with the amount being tossed my way. Maybe it’s because stuff like Bandcamp has made it easier to find them or maybe record labels are getting their shit together and realizing people actually buy this stuff. Whatever it is, it’s awesome, though maybe not for my old, worn down Candlemass, Cathedral, and St. Vitus records which aren’t getting as much attention as they used to. To add to the pile of outstanding doom releases this year, the debut album, Wisdom, by a little band called The Order of Israfel landed in my lap and into my heart.
