Making my Top 15 Albums of 2012 list this year was a bit daunting. There were so many records I heard, and many of the excellent and well deserving of a bit of extra attention. Being as I am, I felt guilty for leaving some of them off, so here I will present, in no particular order other than random, a good handful of albums that came out during 2012 that I enjoyed and feel that you lovely readers should give a listen to. Check ’em out and enjoy!! Peace Love and Metal!!!!
Brendon Small, famous for his hit cartoon series Metalocolypse and the surprisingly excellent offshoot Dethklok records has just released a new musical project veering away from the extreme metal lampooning we’ve all come to love from him. Galaktikon is a concept album with a narrative so outrageous that it could only be compared to Devin Townsend’s Ziltoid: The Omniscient. Instead of relying on the death metal style he has become so famous for, Brendon reaches to classic metal to use as a backdrop for a science fiction super hero divorce drama that takes itself way too seriously, but all not to seriously. By not wearing the goofiness on its sleeve like Dethklok, Galaktikon feels like a much more mature album. But, when you get past the killer riffs and licks and dig into the narrative, which is delivered completely stone-faced serious, you really catch the ridiculousness and hilarity of the whole dern thing.
For fans of Adult Swim’s cartoon line up Brendon Small will come off as quite a familiar name. For those not in the know, he is the mastermind behind the animated shows Home Movies and everyone’s metal themed cartoon, Metalocalypse. Coming off the fame he received from those shows he proved he had heavy metal chops for writing all of Dethklok‘s music (the fictitious band from the Metalocalypse cartoon) and went on to release 2 albums of their music which became the highest charting death metal albums of all time, charting at #21 and #15 on the Billboard charts.
He is now exploring a more melodic side of himself with his new project Galaktikon, a “High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock album” which he has written and produced himself. According to Mr. Small “This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end.” I’m sold 😉 Joining Brendon for this project will be legendary metal drummer Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Fear Factory), bassist Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally band) and engineer and mixer Ulrich Wild.
Here is an official taste of what is to come with the song “On My Way”, the 9th song of the album. I’m picking up a heavy Megadeth vibe from this track. I dig it. The album is set to release in April of 2012. Enjoy and let us know what you think. Peace Love and Metal!!!
