10 years ago if you told me one of the biggest subgenres of metal would include bagpipes, woodwinds, violins, and a ton of European folk melodies, I’d have laughed, called you crazy, then hunted down every record in the genre for my own personal enjoyment. Yes, folk metal is a real thing, and it’s damn fun and with the touch of some bands they are also able to make music that sounds goofy on paper into something special and mature. Here are some kick ass folk metal bands/songs that feature a bagpipe player (piper).

Whoever says women don’t belong in metal is a bigot and a moron, and those that say they should only stick to the Nightwish-y symph-metal bands are the same. Some women in metal have proven that they got some pipes on them that would put the exhaust of a MAC truck to shame. Here’s some bands fronted by some nice, sweet ladies that know how to get their growl on.

If you’ve ever been to an Iron Maiden concert or watched any live video you should be well aware of Bruce’s favorite phrase to amp the crowd up, “Scream for me [insert city name here] !!!!!!”. It always works and he usually says it right before they go into the lesser played fan favorite song or simply a fan favorite, so usually after that bout of screaming, the crowd goes even more apeshit. Enjoy yourself some Iron Maiden (and thank you to my wonderful wife for a pair of Iron Maiden tickets under the Christmas tree!!!!)

The 12 Days of Metalmas: Day 7: Seven Glam Bands A-Laying

Besides starting a massive wave of uber-cheesy bad boy love ballads and countless songs about ‘having a good time’, the glam metal bands of the 80’s got laid, a lot, a real lot. Even though they were covered in lipstick, hairspray, and were more sparkly than a modern-day excuse for a vampire, they were swimming in a deluge of vagina.

The 12 Days of Metalmas: Day 5: Five Gold Rings (To Rule Them All)

One source of inspiration that makes many reprisals in metal is J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic high fantasy tale, Lord of the Rings. Really, it fit’s the genre perfectly with subject matter ranging from acts of heroism and epic battles to loss and pure evil. Here’s 5 songs based off the LOTR world.

Gojira, Alcest, and Uneven Structure are all from France and play some damn great metal.

Gojira know for their poly-rhythmic and percussive style of instrumentation have really broadened and expanded on what can be done in technical metal and also have added tons of heart into their music both from their instruments and also in their environmentally charged lyrics.

Alcest are an interesting beast. To some they may not even be considered metal and that is where their genius shows through. Taking elements of metal that don’t accentuate aggression or brutality they use many of the more beautiful and somber elements of the genre to create some of the best post-metal out there today.

Newcomers Uneven Structure are one of the pioneering bands really pushing the envelope of the whole ‘djent’ craze by injecting elements of ambient music into their pulsing and hard-hitting sound marrying beauty and aggression.

The 12 Days of Metalmas: Day 2: Two Headless Doves

Besides being one of the most revered heavy metal musicians, Ozzy Osbourne is also quite famous for the time he bit the head off a dove. “After signing his first solo career record deal he came in to meet some of the people who worked there. His plan was to release the doves into the air to get people to notice him, but when no one noticed, he changed his plans. He grabbed one dove, bit its head off, then spit the head out. Then with blood still dripping from his lips a security guard came to remove him and on the way out he bit the head off of another dove.”

The 12 Days of Metalmas: Day 1: An Opeth in a Pear Tree

Opeth-HeritageOn the first day of Metalmas my true love gave to me
An Opeth in a pear tree.

On Opeth’s tenth studio album, Heritage, all the members of the Opeth are featured as disembodied floating heads in a tree (it’s seems to be an orange or nectarine tree, but for the sake of argument, let’s say pear) on the album cover. You can see Per Wiberg’s head falling from the tree signifying his departure from the band shortly after the album was finished recording and the pile of skulls his head is destined to fall into all represent the many past members of the band.
