Reggie’s Top 15 of 2015…For Now…In No Particular Order
Posted by Reggie
Throughout the year, I take all of the albums I like; the ones I think might be Top 15 quality and I put them on a list. In no particular order, they sit until a few months before the end of the year. Then, I start deciding what stays and what goes. Sometimes it’s a tough choice, sometimes I have to listen to a few things again to refresh my memory as to why they were on the list in the first place. But, there is a lot of weeding out, weeding in, and sorting. It’s actually kind of fun and I get to take a break from listening to new things for a short while.
This year, I decided to do a best of (so far) list, just to see where things are going. I haven’t done this before. There have been a small handful of albums that went over well with me and I think they will stay on my list, but overall I have to say that it is not a particularly great year in metal as far as I am concerned. The “wow” factor is just not happening all that much this year…for me. This list is in no particular order. It’s a list of albums I think have the most potential for end-year nods. We do still have a way to go though.
Leprous – The Congregation. Newly introduced to me earlier this year. The Congregation is a delightful dose of progressive metal.
Sylosis – Dormant Heart. Excellent quality thrash metal. This one may ride it out to the end of the year.
Sonus Mortis – War Prophecy. This one-man show continues to amaze me.
Ensiferum – One Man Army. This is a fun folk-metal album. They have a bit more diversity than we have seen from these guys (and gal).
Forgotten Tomb – Hurt Yourself and the Ones You Love. Another album with blackened elements that I am really attracted to. This is strange for me.
Finsterforst – Mach Dich Frei. Their atmospheric, folky blackened metal is generally not my go-to genre, but I do dig this album a lot.
Mercy Brown – Mercy Brown. This one surprised the hell out of me. It’s heavy and just sick. Great stuff…definitely a contender to stay on this list!
Paradise Lost – The Plague Within. Despite not exactly reinventing themselves here; it’s still a great PL album and nice to see them go heavy again…and do it well.
Katatonia – Sanctitude. I may not include this just because it is a live album and nothing new, but damn…what an amazing set! Production value is great on the Blu-Ray.
Feared – Synder. A bit slow getting into this one, but very heavy and thrashy; intense too. I am spending more time spinning this highly aggressive album recently and I am digging it a lot.
Enslaved – In Times. More black metal stuff. WTF? Enslaved is new to me and I am enjoying what I am hearing.
6:33 – Deadly Scenes. There is a lot going on with this album. I am still taking it all in; very funky, fresh, and different from anything out there.
The Sun Explodes – The Calm, The Storm. Well, it’s an EP so it probably won’t make my end of year list, but it’s worth mentioning anyway. This EP received overall very high marks from A Metal State of Mind.
Steven Wilson – Hand.Cannot.Erase. Of all the albums on this list, I have listened to this one the least. It’s here based on the weight of Wilson’s creativity, but I promise it will get its fair share of spins and we’ll see how it places at the end of the year, if at all. I am hoping it goes very well.
Royal Thunder – Crooked Doors. Time Machine is probably my song of the year so far. I would be very surprised if this one fell off the list. Nice and 70s-ish proggy. Excellent album.
A couple of other albums teetering on the edge of the Top 15 and honorable mentions are Drakkar’s Run Like The Wolf and Carach Angren’s This Is No Fairy Tale. Though they both went down very favorably during my initial listens, I need more time. I got distracted with other stuff. But, these albums will get more time.
For now this is where metal stands in my life. I am surprised to see anything really black metal related at all on the list let alone three albums. It’s tough to say how things will change by the end of the year. I have some catching up to do with some of these albums in addition to looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year brings. Oh, if you don’t see a currently released album on this list right now, it is unlikely to magically appear. I have probably written it off as a contender. It is also possible I haven’t heard it yet. You never know…
