Sonic Cathedral’s Top Female-Fronted Albums of 2014
Sonic Cathedral is the top website for news and reviews focused exclusively on female-fronted bands. That’s my honest opinion. Femme metal and associated modern FF genres have become hugely popular this century. No group of writers has better relations with the women of rock and metal than SC. No website publishes as much honest and deserved admiration for the great female artists, their music and their gigantic crusade against gender prejudice in metal.
I’m not saying these flowery things about SC because I write occasional reviews for them. It’s the other way around. I feel privileged to have my reviews accepted by Sonic Cathedral because of what they are and what they stand for.
We at Metal State have no gender bias in music. If it may seem that we don’t do enough coverage of FF bands, that’s because of the blunt fact that men hugely outnumber women in metal. The more important difference between Sonic Cathedral and Metal State is that they cover symphonic and Gothic metal much more than we do.
Writers on both sites largely get to choose what they want to review. Both teams of writers gravitate to the bands and genres they enjoy. That is partly a product of personal taste. It is also a product of a shared ethos that it is better for music in general to boost the good stuff with praise rather than damn the weak stuff with destructive criticism. Quality tends to find its own level in the generally under-promoted universe of metal, but the better bands can always gain from an external push.
Many of SC’s writers compiled their own lists of the best FF albums of 2014. SC then used weighted statistical analysis to produce a consolidated Top Ten drawn from all the individual lists, just as we did with our Metal State Top 15 of 2014.
