Reggie’s Top 10 Non-Metal Things of 2014 Part I of II
Posted by Reggie
Other than metal, I like other things in the entertainment industry. Usually, videogames occupy a considerable about of my time, but this year it was binge watching lots of TV. As with my other end-year entertainment lists, not everything here was specifically a 2014 release. It is on this list because it is new to me though I think you will find that the final season of most things here are from 2014. What else do you like besides metal and music? This edition is part 1 of 2 featuring #10-6.
10. The Walking Dead Season 2 – Xbox One
Not a big year in gaming for this guy. I played some fun ones, but the only one that grabbed with me with the storyline is The Walking Dead Season 2 (five episodes). The sequel to the stunner of a Telltale game is a pretty solid game. Of course, lots of dialogue and decision-making allow for an immersive experience. My only beef with the game are that the episodes are too short. Otherwise, it’s not as great as the first season, but still quite fun to play and worth continuing this zombie experience.
9. A Long Way Down – Fiction – Nick Hornby
I read what I would consider a lot of book this year; more than normal anyway, though none really grabbed me like Gone Girl did last year. Of the bunch of 2014 reads, A Long Way Down was probably my favorite as I think about it this very moment. The description from Wikipedia states…The story is written in the first-person narrative from the points of view of the four main characters, Martin, Maureen, Jess and JJ. These four strangers happen to meet on the roof of a high building called Toppers’ House in London on New Year’s Eve, each with the intent of committing suicide. Their plans for death in solitude are ruined when they meet. The novel recounts their misadventures as they decide to come down from the roof alive – however temporarily that may be…
8. Fargo – TV – FX
The television remake of the classic 90s movie is well worth your time. Billy Bob Thornton plays crazy quite well. This series, takes that 90 minute movie and dives deeper into the story of what went down in humble Fargo, North Dakota. I binged on this one…
7. Black Mirror Series 1 & 2 – TV – Britain Channel 4
For the fan of yesteryear’s Twilight Zone (not Twilight the movie) you should check out Black Mirror. It won’t take up a lot of time because both seasons are only three episodes each. With the exception of the second episode of the first season, the stories are great, WTF, head scratching stories very reminiscent of The Twilight Zone except there is no guy at the beginning setting up the story. This can be found on Netflix. As far as the video below, you would never guess in a million years what they were watching on TV.
6. Serial – Podcast
If you are a fan of This American Life (podcast), then you probably heard of Serial which is a spin-off podcast that tells a story over a period of time, hence the name Serial. The inaugural series was about a teen killing in Baltimore, MD. The journalist interviews pretty much everyone involved from the (alleged) killer himself, to witnesses, to lawyers, etc. What makes it so great is how in-depth Sara Koenig gets, critiquing, questioning, examining every aspect of the case and how she reacts to the information she discovers. At the end, whether or not you think he is guilty there is no big reveal. You will, however, wonder why he is in jail to begin with. That’s what this story is about…the journalist’s investigation. After exploring all avenues, it was a very weak case and very interesting to listen to how this entire sad event took place. Each episode was released once a week and ranged from about 30-60 minutes. The only other time I desperately waited for a new episode of something was when Lost was on TV several years back. Serial had me hooked and I look forward to more stories in the future.
