If there is one genre that is bombarding the metal scene, I would day it be the sludge/stoner corner of the metal realm.  There is a lot of black or blackened metal out there too, but bands like 1000Mods are bursting through the seams.  There have been some really good releases and some not so good.  1000Mods, I am happy to say, is part of the good releases as far as I am concerned.  Their low-tuned riffs, prominent bass, gritty vocals, and Kyuss-like southern rhythm is a foot-tapping, beer drinking kind of album that inspires an overall pleasurable head-nodding experience.

I wouldn’t say 1000Mods is a throwback to the 70s, but they do put out that vibe.  They sound fresh and a little more distinct than much of the other sludgy bands I have been hearing lately.  The instrumental at the end of the album, Reverb of the New World, is an excellent album closer with a cool chill cadence that finished on a more upbeat pace at the end.

Overall, a solid album.  It’s not a long album, but there I enough drive and variety to keep things moving and interesting.  The psychedelic touches here and there give the album most of that 70s vibe.  The rest of the album…is just cool and will move some part of your body.  4.0

For geezers like me who love sludge, stoner *and* old-fashioned space rock, this is a hearty meal. Apart from the exaggerated fuzziness of the guitar, this could just about be one of Mammal’s merry memories from the Age of Steam.
