WarpRider – This is just sick!  I mean, everything about Beastwars is just filthy and I mean that with the utmost sincerity.  They give me a whole new impression of New Zealand.  I always saw that country as a nice clean place in pictures, but Beastwars changed my mind.  This is a gritty, sludgy concoction with distorted, disgusting vocals and a bass line that takes things down to the lowest levels.  At times they rock a foot-tapping, headbanging cadence that I can see opening up a circle pit, but for the most part they take sludge rock to depths not too many other bands will go.  I dig it!  4.0

Irmelinis – This is great stuff if you’re looking for heavy, heartfelt and easy-going sludge. Good variation, powerful songs and honest, emotional vocals. Many of the songs are even catchy enough to be great sing-alongs.  3.0

ChristopherMammal – It’s remarkable that such a tidal wave of sound can come from a single guitar and a bass. The two instruments merge to form of wall of steel so deep that not even neutrinos can pass through it. That would be about 100 light years. You don’t need one of those silly metal hats to prevent hostile aliens from reading your mind. Just play this album. Those aliens will rush all the way back home to Cygnus X-1. Now take that sound, add the powerful drumming and the sometimes gooey, sometimes frenzied vocals, and you have one mighty fine mountain of sludge to enjoy. 4.0

A Metal State of Mind Score – 3.6 out of 5

  1. ‘Realms’ doesn’t strike me as brilliant (good video, though), but I’m a fan of this gritty sound in general so I will check out some more of Beastwars. Also a fitting artwork.
