Mammal’s Merry Memories: Subway To Sally – Grabrede (1995)

Folk metal started to develop in two main directions after its beginnings in the 1990s. Bands like Cruachan, from Ireland, pioneered the Celtic metal style. In Germany, milestone bands like the oddly-named Subway To Sally laid the foundations for Mediaeval metal.

Today, folk metal often puts more emphasis on the “metal” than the “folk”. Back in the 1990s, the “folk” part was often more prominent. Subway To Sally’s early albums could easily have been tagged as progressive folk rock. It’s just possible that is one of the reasons this old hippie loves folk metal.

This song is from STS’s second album, “MCMXCV”, named for the year it was released. The band was formed in MCMXCII. Their first album came out in MCMXCIV. Their XIIIth album, “Mitgift”, was released one day before the Ides Of March this year, MMXIV.

About ChristopherMammal

I've made it to Mammal. I still hope to be classified as Human one day. Meanwhile I have evolved enough to recognise different types of music as well as the shrieks of certain vervet monkeys who are known for their scurrilous behaviour in the proximity of unguarded bananas.
