Mammal’s Merry Memories: Jericho – Ethiopia (1972)

I’ve played this song many times in many places. The whole album, “Jericho”, reels in me in every couple of months.

Jericho was one of the names used by an Israeli band active in the psychedelic and classic rock scene from 1965 until about 1975. It issued albums as Churchills, Jericho Jones, just Jericho and The Churchills.

To me, “Ethiopia” felt way ahead of its time. It obviously sounds dated now because it was born before the advent of real metal. Even so, I dare say it will still charm many Metal Staters.

About ChristopherMammal

I've made it to Mammal. I still hope to be classified as Human one day. Meanwhile I have evolved enough to recognise different types of music as well as the shrieks of certain vervet monkeys who are known for their scurrilous behaviour in the proximity of unguarded bananas.

  1. Great pick! Never heard of these guys before. Doesn’t sound dated to me at all, at least, not ’til the vocals kicked in. The long lead-in lead me to believe it was gonna be an instrumental track, actually, which in turn minded me of these:

    a cover of

    a cover of

I can imagine a new band covering Ethiopia and it sounding every bit as fresh as those did in their day – and still do to me.

Guls, my good man, yet again you have brought me pleasure with your meandering into different types of music. You’re also giving away your age again. Even Pixies fans are old fogeys now, you know.

Speed-surfing with Anthrax! How many of us have not wanted to do that, especially in the North Sea in February?

I should ask a couple of power metal bands what they’d think about covering Ethiopia. Meanwhile, here;s some parody surf metal. Be sure to read the blurb on the YT page.

  3. Ha! That’s funny as feck, and a cool tune too 🙂
