Mik’s Top 50 – Intros That Instantly Grab My Attention #15-16

#16 Tool – Eulogy

“Don’t you step out of line. Don’t you fucking lie. You’ve claimed all this time that you would die for me. Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy? You had a lot to say. You had a lot of nothing to say. “

A mysterious, weird and almost hypnotizing intro. It builds up beautifully and seamlessly into the song and just keeps going. After a minute some nice bongo drums are added and around the two minute mark the guitar riffs starts and Maynard comes in sounding like he’s singing through a megaphone. It’s such a great song with emotional vocals and wonderful flow. It’s taken from the album ‘Aenima’, released in 1996.

#15 Cytotoxin – Abysm Nucleus

“A motionless cloud of dust forms a fatal mist. Endless corridors, countless cables.  Power plant vascular system connect a variety of now useless devices, shattered pipes”

I like the contrast between the dark, extremely heavy feeling in the beginning and the happy, uplifting guitar melody that sounds like it’s taken from a cheerful power metal song. But don’t fear, the rest of the song is nothing like power metal, it’s more like really good tech/brutal death metal. This song can be found on the album ‘Radiophobia‘, released in 2012.

  1. The beginning of Eulogy sounds almost like an orthopedic doc chomping away on an old man’s knee who needs a knee replacement. Very good intro. Never heard Cytotoxin, but that was a very bad-ass intro…good guitars, I like it.

Cytotoxin, by definition, is a substance having a specific toxic effect on the brain. Very appropriate band name. It’s not stupid and meaningles like Bring Me The Horizon. Good selection.

  2. Lol, you’re funny 😀
Now I’ll think old, boney knees every time I hear Eulogy..
Only metalheads will prefer toxic brain substances to beautiful horizons… Is Bring Me The Horizon at the top of your list of “worst band names”? 😉
(we should totally make a list like that)

    • I thought about doing that, but would it go against our idea of trying to be positive? BMTH is at the top, but I find a lot of bands of that style have bad names. Would be an interesting tournament though.

      • Yeah, that would be a bit.. mean, I guess. Shouldn’t make fun of their choices of names that are almost as long as a whole sentence and easily mixed up with each other.. (I just can’t keep apart As I Lay Dying, Heaven Shall Burn and All That Remains )

I usually like when bands go against the flow and choose a really odd band name that you can’t really immediately associate with a specific genre (Opeth being the perfect example).. but in Bring Me The Horizon’s case it doesn’t help since all those metalcore bands who started around and after the same time just continued with those incomplete sentence-with-four-words band names… why not try to be original, if not in your music, at least with your band’s name..

      • Yeah Opeth is good and makes you wonder. I wrote a theme a while back about band names. I just revisited it and pretty much feel the same. Not sure if you ever saw it back then, but here is the link.

Yeah, we already have MetalSucks so bashing bands for whatever reason would be counter productive…but it would be fun 😉
