Themed Thursday – Metal Meets The Zodiac

I am not one to normally contemplate my astrology reading of the day.  I do find them interesting at times and often accurate, but sometimes these things can be so vague that they apply to almost anyone.  As we know, signs of the Zodiac are represented by symbols, elements, planets, and stones.  Why not metal bands?  If you know your sign, you should know what band applies to you.  This is what my research for this theme of the week is going to do.  No longer will you have to say you are Aries symbolized by the ram.  Now, you can say I am Aries represented by Arch motherfucking Enemy.  Here is my breakdown of what band should represent you and your astrological sign.

Aries (April March 21 – April 19)

Ruling planet is Mars and is represented by a ram symbol, ruby, and the element fire.  The basic defining characteristic of Aries is enthusiasm, the thrill of the moment, and the secret desire is to lead the way for others.  Within the context of the sign, I noticed that women in general were specifically highlighted due to the fact that Aries women can be forceful, dynamic, and aggressive; therefore, they need a man who can keep up.  For this reason I chose Arch Enemy to represent this sign.  As implied above, lead vocalist Angelo Gossow has led the way for others when it comes to women in metal.  Though not the first to front a metal band, she is of a rare breed that can growl with the top-rated men of the genre.  Since she joined the band, she has opened the doors for other like-minded women to come out and scream with the best of them.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Taurus is ruled by Venus and represented by the element Earth, the bull, and the emerald. The Taurus is characterized as determined energy with the desire for life stability and security.  Taureans are described as those that can get into autopilot mode and feel comfortable with their creature comforts; rarely straying from their set path.  Because of their determined energy and the lack of straying from their comfort zone, I selected Thrash metal pioneers Overkill.  If you have ever seen Overkill live, it is basically an energy bomb exploding right before your very eyes.  Without sounding negative, Overkill is also a band that after 16 albums has rarely strayed from what they love to do.  Whether you listen to their first or last album, the latter is basically just more polished thrash.  And I love them for that.  Oh, their logo is often colored bright green…um, like an emerald.  Coincidence?  I think not.  If you don’t agree, they have a song for that…it’s called “Fuck You.” 😉

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Gemini is symbolized by twins with its ruling planet Mercury.  Gemini’s representation is the aquamarine and the element air.  The main characteristic of a Gemini is their need to be ahead of the crowd and to explore a little bit of everything around them.  At A Metal State of Mind, we have been doing some posts on “mental” metal.  I find that coincidental because the Gemini’s vibration is intense mental energy.  Gemini’s can appear detached or mysterious and unfortunately are often misunderstood or underappreciated.   This was a tough choice for a band or artist because so many can be mysterious and/or definitely misunderstood.  I think Tool certainly fits this bill and is a top-notch choice.  They are incredibly underappreciated and Maynard James Keenan is definitely mysterious.  Tool is also exploring the world around them with their vivid videos and deep lyrical content.  Although I don’t think Tool wants to be ahead of the crowd, I do think they like to have their own crowd…and if you want to join in, the more the merrier.  Did I mention Gemini’s can also be multi-dimensionally talented?  Just so happens Keenan is a singer, songwriter, musician, producer, winemaker, and actor.  He was also in the U.S. Army.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Cancer is symbolized by the crab and for good reason; they are characterized as a bundle of contradiction otherwise summed up as moody.  I am not sure why, but when you say moody it usually refers to the grumpy side of things.  They are ruled by the Moon, crab, water, and moonstone.   Cancers need constant reassurance and security.  Since this is my sign I suppose I can agree with most of what I read about Cancers. You want moody, you got it.  Here is the UK’s most prolific doom metal band, Paradise Lost, to represent Cancer the crab.  Oh, by the way, Cancers are a yo-yo sign where they can feel one way one minute and another way they next. Yes, I can attest to that as well.  If you know Paradise Lost, then you know their discography strongly varies in tempo and style over the last two decades.  Only in recent years they have returned to their doom roots…the second half of the yo.  And now you have the Cancer band, Paradise Lost.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Leo is ruled by the Sun, lion, and fire.  Its stone is the pretty green peridot.  The Leos want to be stars and to lead the way.  Leos are trendsetters, adventurers, and leaders.  They are not afraid to try new things; their pride being their only weakness.  If you want a band that is a star then look no further than Metallica.  Metallica set trends.  They changed the face of thrash metal and inspired numerous copycats.  They make no excuses for the style changes they decided on over the last 20 years.  They are perhaps the biggest metal band of modern time.  Therefore, Metallica represents Leo the trendsetter and the band that wanted to be a star.  They sure got what they wanted.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Symbolized by the virgin, Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the element Earth, and the Sapphire.  Virgos want to do the right thing; always compassionate and caring.  They are the givers of the astrological signs.  No matter how hard Virgos get put down, they always see the best in everyone.  Of all the astrological signs, this one is the hardest to pick a metal band to represent the sign.  When I think of how caring they are and willing to care for people, I think of a band who acts like a mentor to others.  This is perhaps the best way to make a metal band fit this category.  What bands out there have carved their path and are willing to do everything they can to help others get noticed?  Who is willing to use their name and take little known or unknown bands with them on tour and spread the gospel of metal to the world?  Ozzy Osbourne, that’s who!  He brought the festival to America and because of this, we have many metal bands that established themselves and became metal gods because of those tours…which I never got to see even though I had a ticket once.  Though not a Virgo himself, Ozzy and the Ozzfest is one of the main reasons metal survived the 90s and began to thrive in the 2000s.  Oh, we should credit Sharon as well.  She is not a Virgo either.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Libras are ruled by Venus, air, opals, and symbolized by the scales.  Their desire is to live an easy and uncomplicated life.  Librans have an ability to escape into obscure role-playing and tend to be successful business people.   They can be very independent and like to take opportunities to express more diverse side of the personality.  When you see a Libra, they may have a happy-go-lucky appearance even if that is not what’s going on inside.  This is another difficult sign to for a metal band to represent.   I can imagine it’s not an easy task to be successful in business while striving for an uncomplicated life.  My best choice for this sign is an expressive solo artist that fits this ticket, but lives these traits through his band.  I was thinking of Marilyn Mason for the obscure expressive side, but living an uncomplicated life just doesn’t fit at all.  Than it came to me.  Mikael Akerfeldt and his (primary) band Opeth.  If there is ever a band or artist that really is expressive it is Opeth, specifically Akerfeldt.  They are incredibly diverse, expressive (listen to Heritage), obscure, and I do get the impression he lives a relatively uncomplicated life.  The dude just loves to make music, but retains most of the control and is very successful at it.  Libras are lucky to have Opeth on your side. Enjoy!  I’m jealous.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Ruled the planet formerly known as Pluto; Scorpio’s are resilient and want nothing more than triumph. They want to survive against all others.  They are represented by the stone Topaz and the element water.  Symbolized by the scorpion, it’s no wonder they are resilient.  In an age when the Big Four have defined thrash, it will be hard for any other thrash band to reach that level of success.  This is probably why so many bands have melded multiple genres to form new subgenres.  While that is great, I know of one band that does want to be big by carrying the Thrash torch.  Through their interviews, I can tell they are driven and want staying power.  So far, this is the youngest band on the list and I think Trivium is a strong representation of a band that puts up with some harsh criticism.  They want to triumph ahead of the pack.  They carry the thrash torch and I think because of their stellar cover of Master of Puppets, have endured numerous copycat claims.  Personally, I think they are bad-ass for a newer generation of metal band.  Despite the flack they get, they do have a strong fan-base and have held their own headlining some cool tours and playing the big stage at festivals.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Overly expressive this sign is.  They are ruled by Jupiter and accompanied by fire and turquoise.  A Sagittarius wants to make a difference in the world.  The big-hearted Sagittarians are freedom loving, optimistic, and honest.  Despite their philosophical and intellectual nature they have a tendency to have a problem with being tactful.  Sagittarians are represented by the archer symbol because once they aim their sights, they go after whatever it is they desire.   This reminds me of a band doesn’t necessarily fit the bill for metal, but metalheads were drawn to them.  They did their own thing when metal subgenres really were pretty thrash-related.  Whenever I saw them I always thought of them as a fun band and honest.  They never seemed to sugarcoat anything lyrically.  When I saw Faith No More’s live at Brixton VHS tape, Mike Patton farted in the microphone.  So that takes care of the tact thing.  I view Mike Patton as a highly intellectual person and Faith No More’s music to be innovative for the time frame they emerged and even still today.  To pin Mike to the archer, he takes aim and does what he does embedding himself in so many different projects.  And they did make a difference in the world.  They paved the way for many other bands to start taking the best bits of metal and making something new and different.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Capricorn is a powerful resilient energy.  They are the high-roller of the zodiac world, but at the same time can be happy being less well-known with a smaller domain. Capricorn’s are ruled by the beautiful Saturn, the element Earth, and the stone garnet.  They are also symbolized by the goat.  The average person has probably never heard of Dream Theater.  If you ask a Dream Theater fan about Dream Theater, they will probably come off as fanatical.  People who follow Dream Theater love them.  Despite the die-hard following, you won’t hear much of Dream Theater on the radio or on TV.  I think they like it that way.  I am sure there was a time when they may have wanted to be bigger than they are, but if you ask me Dream Theater is the biggest selling band most people don’t know about.  They create truly beautiful music and they probably have their astrological planet, Saturn, to thank for that.  Capricorn’s deserve Dream Theater and should be very proud to have such a top-notch band to represent them.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Aquarius is the trend setter ruled by Uranus (ha ha), the element air and the amethyst.  The funny thing mentioned about Aquarius is that they march to a different drummer and make up new music as they go along; hence trendsetter.  There are a lot of bands out there trying to establish themselves as unique. I think in most cases they fail at least in some part.  It seems like most bands today are starting to kind of sound the same.  But, there is one out there that I think is a new trendsetter.  Unlike Metallica, they will probably never be the star, but they have intertwined a few genres into a unique sound.  Between the Buried and Me definitely makes up their music along the way.  Odd time signatures mixed in with rock, prog, thrash, and a tidbit of other genres is the basis of theirs.  They are another of the newer bands on this list and have done a better job than most creating their style.  A band like Between the Buried and Me is one of those bands paving the way for a new kind of metal.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

The fish sign is represented by the cool blue Neptune, the element water, and the bloodstone – cool!  Pisces wants to live their dreams and turn fantasy into reality.  They spend a lot of time in fantasy land, which for a Pisces can lead to some problems.  However, when it comes to fantasy, one band immediately comes to mind.  Say no more about this sign; it has power metal written all over it.  When it comes to fantasy and dreams think none other than Blind Guardian.  There is much I do not know of this band, but I do know they take the themes from popular fantasy novels and turn them into sweeping power metal majesty.   Blind Guardian is master of fantasy.

Whichever sign you are, wear your metal band/artist proudly.  I hope you enjoyed this theme of the week.  If you want to look up more information on your specific sign, I retrieved my research from this site.  However, there are tons of sites out there, read and believe and your own risk.  One thing is concrete…you have a metal band.  Enjoy!

  1. I’m the Power Metal-sign! Everything that is written about that sign is true for me too. I live in fantasy-land, dream too much, I’m idealistic, creative, emotional.. and everything else. Even though I don’t believe horoscopes really.

But I do not, and almost never have, listened to Blind Guardian 😀
    Maybe I should start..

You really chose some cool songs for all the signs.

    • If you want a good recommendation about Blind Guardian ask Matt. I am new to them, but liked what I heard so far. Unfortunately, I am doom Cancer, but I like to think I am pretty positive most of the time, my face just doesnt show it. Thank you for reading.

    • Ahh, Blind Guardian. I’ll try to keep this as concise as possible 😉 My favorite and highest recommendation is Nightfall in Middle-Earth. If you are a Tolkien fan, you should love that record even more. Imaginations from the Other Side is a great BG starter too. Their earlier work is more pure speed/power metal but over time they became more orchestral/epic. If you like lots of orchestration and high production in your music, A Night at the Opera is a masterpiece. Their latest record, At the Edge of Time, is phenomenal too. It’s more ballad-centric, but not the cheesy love song kind of ballad. Well worth checking out.

      • Thanks for recommendations. Yes I am a Tolkien-fan. I’ll check out Nightfall in Middle Earth and A night at the opera.

  2. Sweet! I’m a Dream Theater. To a degree the zodiac signs work out decent. Capricorns are described as stubborn, rigid, overambitious, passionate, mellow, and laid back. Yup that’s me, lol. They say the goat is pessimistic also, but, well I guess they all can’t be right, lol.
    Awesome and fun post!

  3. Reggie: Since I was born on the lighter side of Libra….
could you say something about the subgenre of metal which would be asociated
    with it?

PS : Opeth is perfect for the dark side of Libra,
    not the entire sign.

    • If you are the lighter side of Libra, which nearby sign are you closer to? For the uncomplicated Libra, if Opeth leans toward the darker side, I would think Porcupine Tree might not be so dark, but still falls within the diverse elements.

Thank you for the comment. I had to go back and reread this post. I damn near forgot about it. It’s been a while…4 years I think…
