Metal of Ice and Fire Pt. III

With season 2 of Game of Thrones right around the corner I thought I might continue with my little project of matching A Song of Ice and Fire characters up with metal songs.  As always, if you haven’t read up to the latest novel, A Dance with Dragons, Spoiler Warning!!!!  Check out Part I and Part II if you haven’t already and feel free to comment and leave suggestions for character/metal song pairings.  Enjoy!!  Peace Love and Metal!!!

Cersei Lannister/Baratheon

Cersei, the Queen of deception.  If there’s one character in the whole series that is completely full to the brim with shit, it would be her.  And what song would be more perfect for her other than “Liar” by Rollins Band.  Just replace Henry with Cersei and there you go.  Well maybe Cersei is a bit more twisted than Henry’s character in this song.

Loras Tyrell, The Knight of Flowers

Loras may wear a suit of armor decorated with flowers and engage in ‘activities’ with Renly Baratheon, but that doesn’t make him any less bad ass.  He always shows honor and courage and is a master with a sword and lance.  He is more manly than some of the manliest men of Westeros.  For Loras I went with “Danza di Fuoco e Ghiaccio” (“Dance of Fire and Ice” no relation) by Rhapsody of Fire.  The song has a cheesy and flamboyant air to it just like Loras, but at the same the song completely bad ass, just like Loras.  (Skip to 1:05 to get right to the music if you wish to bypass the Christopher Lee spoken word intro)

Brienne of Tarth

While not the looker, the Maiden of Tarth makes up for her butchness with her impeccable battle skills by besting some of the best that Westeros has to offer, including showing the Kingslayer who’s boss.  I think “Show Me How to Die” captures the brutal side of her personality perfectly.  And if Brienne were a singer in a metal band she would probably sound exactly like Nitte Valo.

Oberyn Martell, The Red Viper

Oberyn didn’t get his nickname, The Red Viper, by chance.  With his sharp and conniving tongue and various rumors that he poisons he weapons to ensure his foe perish.  While Alice Cooper‘s song “Poison” is about a broad, I still think it fits Oberyn just fine, because with the combination of his tongue and manticore venom he truly is poison.

Sandor Clegane, The Hound

Not only does “The Baying of the Hounds” by Opeth make reference to, well, hounds, the protagonist in the song also has a lot in common with Sandor.  From killing people to regret and confusion to a deep need of redemption, you would almost think that this song was written about The Hound.  But of course Sandor is a much deeper character and one could write an entire album/book on him alone.

Melisandre of Asshai

The Red Priestess like to burn things, especially things that are alive.  Vikings like fire as well, burning and pillaging everything they came across.  Enjoy heavy metal Viking’s Amon Amarth and their song, “Death in Fire”

Joffrey Baratheon

I was going to post a Limp Biscuit video because Joffrey is a little bitch and Fred Durst is a little bitch.  They’re probably the most hated personalities in their mediums.  But I just can’t disgrace my blog by posting that drek.  So, here’s a hilarious video of Tyrion slapping Joffrey for ten minutes to “Achillies Last Stand” by Led Zepplin.  Enjoy!

  1. Good picks here. I held off trying to avoid the spoilers. When you did this first post, I had no idea what it all meant, but after seeing season 1 of Game of Thrones…I get it. As soon as my class is over – one more week, I will be able to find time to start reading the series from teh first book. I look very forward to the second season and hope to be caught up with the books by the time it’s over. Awesome post and thank you for helping me discover Martin. I would have never thought to watch the HBO show if I didn’t recognize the name of the book.
